What is the lowest level of investment banking?
Entry-level investment bankers may be referred to as “junior bankers” broadly, but job titles will more likely use the term “analyst” to indicate a true entry-level position and “associate” to indicate a role requiring some experience.
Analysts are the lowest in the hierarchy chain and therefore do the majority of the work. The work includes three primary tasks: Building Presentations. Financial and Valuation Analysis.
Position Title | Typical Age Range | Timeframe for Promotion |
---|---|---|
Analyst | 22-27 | 2-3 years |
Associate | 25-35 | 3-4 years |
Vice President (VP) | 28-40 | 3-4 years |
Director / Senior Vice President (SVP) | 32-45 | 2-3 years |
1 - Analyst
Nearly all entry-level analysts come from top schools and perform very well academically. Most start out with an investment bank on a two-year or three-year program, where they act as the grunts for higher-ranking employees.
The smallest of the investment banks, both in terms of firm size and typical deal size, are the banks referred to as regional boutique banks. Regional boutiques usually have no more than a handful to a few dozen employees.
The hierarchy (from bottom to top) is as follows: Junior Management – Scale I (Officer) Middle Management – Scale II (Manager) & Scale III (Senior Manager) Senior Management – Scale IV (Chief Manager) & Scale V (Assistant General Manager)
Finance Job Titles Hierarchy
The leader of most finance teams is the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and they report to the CEO. At smaller companies the top finance position might instead be the Vice President of Finance or Treasurer.
Ways to make a lot of money in this world

In the U.S., the top investment banking companies include the Big Four Banks — JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo.
What does an entry level investment banker do?
As an entry-level worker, you may still be getting training from those with more experience. Your responsibilities may be to provide research assistance to other bankers or to create data models of bank finance and market data for further analysis.
Many are retired out of the industry early on as they either don't make the cut or just can't stand the work. Otherwise, for those who do go the distance and retire around 55–65 years old, they're definitely more than comfortable by that point.

It also requires strong mathematical and analytical capabilities, which may be challenging for some people. In addition to a bachelor's degree, investment bankers may need a master's in finance or an M.B.A.
