How much cash does the average bank have on hand?
Banks tend to keep only enough cash in the vault to meet their anticipated transaction needs. Very small banks may only keep $50,000 or less on hand, while larger banks might keep as much as $200,000 or more available for transactions. This surprises many people who assume bank vaults are always full of cash.
Cash on Hand as of December 2022 : $237.46 B
According to Bank of America 's latest financial reports the company has $237.46 B in cash and cash equivalents. A company's cash on hand also refered as cash/cash equivalents (CCE) and Short-term investments, is the amount of accessible money a business has.
Cash drawer limits help prevent theft, robbery, fraud, and errors. They also ensure that tellers have enough cash to serve customers without delays or shortages. Cash drawer limits vary by bank, branch, and teller, but they usually range from $3,000 to $10,000.
How have bank assets changed over time? By the end of 2022, banks in the US owned a combined $22.3 trillion in assets, up 32% over the last decade after adjusting for inflation. Over half of bank assets are net loans and leases, followed by investments and cash and due, which refers to the money a bank has on hand.
Six in 10 of the Youngest Adults Have $1,000 or Less
About 61% of that age group has $1,000 or less in savings. The largest percentage by far, about 31%, has only $100 or less. Another 14% have between $100 and $500, and the remaining 16% have between $500 and $1,000.
In terms of savings accounts specifically, you'll likely find different estimates from different sources. The average American has $65,100 in savings — excluding retirement assets — according to Northwestern Mutual's 2023 Planning & Progress Study. That's a 5% increase over the $62,000 reported in 2022.
Key findings. The median saving account balance amount is $1,200 while the mean (average) is $25,898. Both median and average savings are down from 2022. The median savings account balance is down from $4,500, while average savings account balance is down from $35,366.
Bait money or bait bills are bills with known serial numbers, used by banks to aid the tracing of bank robbers. The serial numbers are recorded by the bank either by making a copy or by listing in a log book. During a bank robbery, if a robber has taken the bait money, details of this can be passed on to the police.
The small amount of cash that a company considers petty will vary, with many companies keeping between $100 and $500 as a petty cash fund. Examples of transactions that a petty cash fund is used for include: Office supplies. Cards for customers.
Anytime you access your business banking account at a branch, your bank teller can see your account information, including: Your balance. Transaction history. Credit products, such as personal lines of credit, credit cards, etc.
How much money does the average person have in their bank account?
While the median bank account balance is $8,000, according to the latest SCF data, the average — or mean — balance is actually much higher, at $62,410.

Most American households have at least $1,000 in checking or savings accounts. But only about 12% have more than $100,000 in checking and savings.
A majority, 65%, say they live paycheck to paycheck, according to CNBC and SurveyMonkey's recent Your Money International Financial Security Survey, which polled 498 U.S. adults. That's a slight increase from last year's results, which found that 58% of Americans considered themselves to be living paycheck to paycheck.
But despite the larger pressures, they're not satisfied with their situation; 57% of respondents said the current state of their savings is stressing them out. Nearly one in four (22%) of U.S. adults have no emergency savings at all, Bankrate found—the second-lowest percentage in 13 years of polling.
The numbers are consistently around 60%, meaning only 40% of Americans have enough savings to cover an unexpected expense without going into debt. As of January 2023, the report shows that 57% of Americans have less than $1,000 in savings.
More Than Half of Americans Have Less Than $10,000 Saved
Going up a little more, just 6% have between $100,001 and $200,000 saved. Few Americans have saved more than $300,000: 4% have between $350,001 and $500,000. 4% have saved between $500,001 and $750,000 and another 4%, have more than $750,000 saved.
There are estimated to be a little over 8 million households in the US with a net worth of $3 million or more.

As Ramos (1996) points out, during and immediately after a severe liquidity crisis, banks hoard excess cash to self-insure against further drains of cash and to send markets a strong message that their solvency is not at risk and that bank runs are not justifiable.
As you say, bait money is a stack of serialized notes the bank keeps for every teller. The bank gives this list to the police upon reporting the robbery. The money that has left the bank is now considered evidence.
The chemical reaction causing the explosion of the pack and the release of the dye creates high temperatures of about 200 °C (400 °F) which further discourages a criminal from touching the pack or removing it from the bag or getaway vehicle. Dye packs are used to foil robberies in over 75% of banks in the U.S.
