Can you go into private equity straight out of college?
Private equity firms typically do not usually hire straight out of college or business school unless the student has previous significant private equity internships or work experience.
Coming into private equity with no experience is impossible, so finding an internship or having previous experience in a related field is highly recommended. Private equity professionals can advance fast within a firm and typically start as junior associates or analysts.
Which Firms Offer PE Internships? Nearly all the large private equity firms (“mega-funds”) offer some form of internships to undergrads: KKR, Blackstone, Ares, Silver Lake, Carlyle, TPG, Apollo, and, on the European side, firms like Cinven, CVC, Bridgepoint, EQT, and Permira.
PE firms still hire a lot of former bankers, but you can also join as an undergraduate, do a part-time internship, and convert that into a full-time offer. This move is less common in developed markets.
Academic Excellence: Most Private Equity firms will not look at a candidate that has lower than a 3.0 GPA (more likely 3.5 GPA at top firms). Communication Skills: Ability to write and speak well suggests that you'll be successful working with clients and PE colleagues.
Although most private equity firms prefer not to hire and train graduates, but instead get someone with a few years of investment banking experience, you can still find a private equity role as an undergraduate.
Blackstone considers candidates from schools across the globe. Candidates eligible for full-time opportunities are completing their final year of college or graduate school.
The standard profile that private equity firms will look for is a candidate with a top undergrad degree, high GPA, and investment banking experience. With few exceptions, this is the only way in to the largest firms. There is some opportunity available for candidates with an MBB consulting background.
The Cold, Harsh Truth About Low Grades
If you've earned a low GPA over several years, industries such as investment banking and private equity are probably not right for you.
Getting a job in private equity typically requires a strong educational background in finance or a related field, relevant experience in areas like investment banking, and proficiency in financial modeling and investment analysis.
How do I start a career in private equity?
As a starting point, the right career background is critical. Overwhelmingly, PE firms hire people with experience working for top investment banks, and sometimes those with consulting, Big 4 transaction services, or related deal/valuation experience (e.g., corporate development at a normal company).
Investment banking and private equity are two of the most prestigious and competitive areas in finance, offering significant opportunities for advancement and high compensation. However, there are many differences between the two career paths.
As we detailed earlier, the initial roles in private equity are focused on research and math. You'll need analytical skills and knowledge of formulas and financial modeling to work with the software that makes this data-driven culture function.
These odds are similar to or worse than playing any of the professional sports. Less than 1% of the population size pursing any competitive field is likely to compete at the elite level. In the highly competitive world of finance like hedge funds or PE, less than 1% of students break into one of the top 10 firms.
In short, if you're at a top mega fund, then you can expect to get paid between $350-$400k per year. These numbers reflect total compensation paid to private equity associates in 2022.
While both are among the most competitive Wall Street careers, investment banking is considered easier to break into than private equity.
While the travel will be less, the work in private equity is very stressful and demanding, so the hours you actually spend working may be more stressful or mentally demanding.
For years Blackstone has been known for hiring only the best, or those who graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Ivy League schools like Harvard or Yale. That's changed somewhat. Technology has helped Blackstone expand its reach, said Paige Ross, the firm's global head of human resources.
We have lots of programs for a variety of experiences—there's something for undergraduates, MBAs, and those with advanced degrees. There are internships for those curious about consulting, for future female leaders with already extensive work experience, and for business functions like knowledge management.
Goldman Sachs is the premier investment bank in the world. With an acceptance rate of roughly 4%, it's harder to get into Goldman than it is to get into Harvard or Yale. Let me share how to get a job at Goldman Sachs from someone who did.
Does JP Morgan look at GPA?
Candidates must demonstrate academic strength – a minimum 3.2 GPA for juniors and a minimum 3.5 GPA for freshmen and sophom*ores, strong teamwork, communication skills and a high energy level.
Goldman Sachs does not give a specific minimum GPA requirement, though some sources suggest a GPA of at least 3.6 is preferred. Additionally, you may need to show relevant coursework and hard skills for certain programs.
GPA Cutoffs for Investment Banking
The cut off for Bulge Brackets is usually 3.5 or an 80% average, but the median is much closer to 3.7 or 3.8. Expect 30% of banks to give you a call assuming the appropriate networking obligations have been met with a 3.6, 50% with a 3.8 and 80% above 3.8.
Your cumulative grade / GPA as recognized by the university in which you are currently enrolled. Your motivation for applying in 300 words or less. Information regarding your proficiency of other languages. A current CV / resume in one of the following formats, Microsoft Word, Rich Text Format, Text or PDF.
It is preferred that a student should have a GPA of 3.5 or above throughout his education career if he/she wants grades to never be a thorn in their career roadmap. Investment Banking companies/recruiters do consider the GPA of any candidate before hiring him/her.
